After the Deepwater Horizon disaster, what has British Petroleum (BP) done?This corporation has taken up the responsibility to compensate all the victimswho are suffering from the losses and damages caused by the oil spill.Seriously speaking, workers and business owners displaced by the gulf oil spillshould know how to file a BP claim in order to regain their financial stabilityafter the unexpected incident.
Here are FOUR things I would like to share with you:
• Who is eligible to claim?
BP is responsible to compensate for the following: 1) Bodilyinjury Anyone who has injured due to the oil spill disaster and he or sheis required to go through medical treatment, either short-term orlong-term. 2) Property damage Individuals whose real properties orboats were damaged due to this incident can ask for compensation fromBP. 3) Loss of income Workers or business owners who can prove thatthey suffer losses due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. For instance, a boatcaptain has lost his job after the disaster. By providing his fishing licenseand proof of income, he will be able to obtain the claim from BP.
• Where to submit your claim?
Currently, BP has claim offices in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Inorder to speed up the claiming process, BP has also established several claimoffices along the Gulf Coast. The claim centers open from 8am till 7pm everydayto assist the victims.
• How to submit the claim form?
You are recommended to contact BP claim office by dialing its toll-freenumber, i.e. 1-800-440-0858. The line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek. The personnel or officer on duty will provide you the detailedinformation on how to submit your claim. In order to be fast, you are advisedto complete the online form and submit it directly after you have filled up therequired fields.
• How can you be compensated?
After receiving your claim, BP will take immediate action to process yourclaim. You will be contacted within 48 hours. BP’s adjuster will investigateand evaluate your claim based on your situation. If the claims are large andcomplicated, the adjuster will need more time for investigation anddocumentation. Once your claim has been approved, BP officer will contact youto discuss the interim payments. Until today, BP has paid up to $5000 per monthas interim payment for the victims. Individuals will receive different amountof compensation based on the losses they suffer.
In general, most of the victims will get the interim payments first. Theremainder of the losses will be determined by BP later after thoroughinvestigation is done. If your claim is very complicated, you are advised toget a professional lawyer to assist you. This is to ensure that your rightswill be well protected.
